Being healthy and happy throughout the years of our lives is something we all want. It takes a lot of work to maintain a healthy body and mind, and as we get older and other responsibilities get in the way we can often leave this by the wayside. 

However, even as we grow older we need to take care of our bodies and take those steps to being healthy. This is why today we are going to take a look at some of the best ways for you to stay healthy and fit this year.

Even as we get older it is important to consider birth control and the effects it may have on our lifestyle. Quit smoking

Even though as you get older you might hurt more than you used to, it doesn’t mean you can avoid exercising as much as you once did. Eat well

The way we eat is the most important contributing factor in our health and if you want to stay healthy for longer, you need to eat well and look after your body. Make sure to combine healthy foods such as roasted vegetables and lean protein with carbs for a balanced and healthy diet which will also be satisfying. 

Maintain your weight 

There is no reason you shouldn’t be able to maintain a healthy weight as long as you take the time every day to move around a little and you don’t eat like a whale. Our body needs the energy to live and this is measured in calories. We need approximately 2000 calories to perform basic body functions such as breathing, walking and pumping blood around the body. As well as this, you might be able to burn calories doing extra exercise each day, and this allows you to lose weight. It’s important to remember that as we get older, our metabolism slows down and this is when our weight can creep up. Prevent falls

One of the unfortunate things you can struggle with when you get older is a loss of balance and strength in the body. Because of this you will need to work harder to prevent falls. When you are struggling with your balance, you should take it easy and hold onto rails or walls to keep you steady. If you end up falling you are more likely to do damage to yourself.

Get your regular checkups 

When you reach the age above 25, women are supposed to go for a cervical screening every 3 years as standard and men should also think about going for cancer checks now and again. It is important to keep on top of your doctor’s appointments even if they are just for your yearly flu jab. 

Look after your skin

The summer sun is an amazing thing and we all enjoy sitting out in it, but as we all know, too much sun exposure can cause skin cancer and other issues. When you head out in the summer sun this year, make sure to wear lots of sunscreen and avoid direct sunlight in the middle of the day. 


Test your eyes and ears 

When you are looking to stay healthy and fit as an older person, two of the senses which you need to check up on the most are your sight and hearing. You might not even remember the last time you went for an eye or ear test and this can be a reason why you struggle to see or hear things people are saying to you. It is important to maintain these senses in particular because they are the most crucial ones for us to have.

Stress is one of those lingering things we suffer from, often without even thinking about it. Stress is something which can cause more than a headache, and stress related illnesses can range and vary far and wide. With high stress levels comes an increase in the risk of heart attack and high blood pressure, as well as anxiety and depression amongst other things. It is important when you feel stressed to step away and take some time for yourself where you can think things over.
